Recovering from Pudendal Neuralgia

Once infections and other clearly identifiable conditions have been ruled out (see the What to Rule Out First section in Education), and testing hasn’t revealed a structural issue, it's normal to feel unsure of what to do. It's likely that symptoms are driven by nerve irritation, muscle tension, or nervous system sensitization rather than an active medical condition.

At this point, recovery becomes about supporting the body and nervous system so healing can happen over time.

A Holistic Approach

Many of us have been taught to take a pill or undergo a procedure to fix a problem. Pudendal neuralgia and other nerve-related pain conditions often require a different approach. Recovery involves addressing multiple pieces over time, taking a more holistic view of what the body and nervous system need.

We’ve organized the common aspects of recovery into five categories so you can explore what feels most relevant and supportive for you. You don’t need to work on all of them at once - many people start with one or two areas and build from there as their symptoms improve.

Physical Recovery

Physical recovery focuses on reducing irritation to the pudendal nerve and addressing muscle tension or imbalances that may be contributing to symptoms. This often involves physical therapy and strength work to reset the body and support healing over time.

Nervous System Regulation

Nervous system regulation focuses on learning how to recognize when your body is stuck in a heightened stress response and guiding it back toward a calmer, safer state. For many people with pudendal neuralgia, this is a key part of recovery, as a sensitized nervous system can drive pain and symptoms even when there is no ongoing injury.

Riding Adjustments

Riding adjustments focus on changing how you ride in ways that reduce pressure on the pudendal nerve and support healing. For many people, this means modifying position, equipment, or riding style.

Lifestyle Balance

Lifestyle balance focuses on creating a more sustainable relationship between training, rest, recovery, and the stress of daily life. It’s about reducing overall load so your body has the capacity to heal.

Mind-Body Connection

Pain is influenced not only by physical factors, but by the experiences and stress the body has carried over time. Exploring the mind–body connection offers a way to understand pain and injury with more context, compassion, and curiosity.
